Turnitin Guide: Turnitin Updates

Turnitin advice for NCI students and staff

It's come to our attention that faculty have been unable to bulk download student submissions from Turnitin recently. We are in contact with Turnitin and are trying to resolve this issue. Thank you for your patience in the meantime.

October 2025

  • Turnitin's 2025 Virtual Customer Summit will take place from the 3rd to the 30th November. You can build your own agenda with live sessions across the first two weeks and on-demand content available all month. Register here
  • From the 4th November, there will be new data export options whereby standard assignment data and AI writing detection data may be exported together as a CSV file, allowing for flexible analysis.
  • Learn about the new Feedback Studio in this webinar on the 28th of October.

August 2025

Turnitin is launching AI bypassing detection capability. The AI writing report highlights the text segments that Turnitin's model predicts were likely written by an AI tool, and content that was likely AI-written, then further modified using an AI bypassing or AI paraphrasing tool to make it sound more human and avoid detection. Color-coded insights will enable you to interpret results easily, and this tool is built into the existing Similarity Report workflow, so staff are not required to complete any additional steps  to access the data generated.

May 2025

Turnitin have developed a Peer review and feedback educator guide. See here to access this.

January/February 2025

  • Turnitin's grading workspace has been rebuilt for greater accessibility. Key enhancements include in-margin comments, pinned feedback so that the most important feedback can be emphasised for students, faster QuickMark creation with improved search functionality, and flexible grading scales with ranged rubrics and decimal grading. These upgrades are expected to appear in July 2025.
  • NCI is in the process of upgrading to Turnitin LTI 1.3. If you would like to learn about some of the improvements that will accompany this upgrade, Turnitin will host a webinar discussing this on March 11th which you may join.
  • A series of workshops will be taking place over the next several weeks on various aspects of Turnitin tools and how they can be used most effectively. Register here to secure your space

June/July 2024

  • AI Paraphrasing Detection (AIP) launched July 16th. Integrated with the Turnitin AI writing detection tool, this helps to identify when text spinners such as Quillbot, Grammarly, and Scribbr were used to modify AI-generated text. AIP will work automatically for all submissions processed for AI writing detection.
  • AI writing detection max wordcount has been increased to 30,000 words.
  • Paper to Digital launched July 13th. This new workflow allows instructors the flexibility to deliver paper-based assignments at scale with digital tools to streamline the feedback and grading process, leveraging technologies such as AI-assisted grading. Say goodbye to piles of paper and red pens!
