Acquisitions guide for staff requesting book, ebook and personal copies

Personal copies

Lecturers have an annual book allowance to support teaching and research.  Please email maeve.byrne@ncirl.ie or tim.lawless@ncirl.ie with any requests.

PRINT AND EBOOK ACQUISITIONS

Norma Smurfit Library purchases print and ebooks based on module booklists.  We usually purchase multiple print copies for recommended texts, and one copy of any supplementary reading.  Where possible, we aim to provide either a desk reserve copy or ebook access for core recommended reading.

The library accesses booklists from the QQI course validation documents, or from the coursebuilder system. Lecturers can now use this guide and form to submit booklist requests.  You can check your module reading availability by using the online library catalogue.  Please use the order form below to request any resources which are not currently in stock.  There is also an option to upload your module booklist on the form and we will double check for you.

Budgetary restraints do have to be taken into account, unfortunately we are sometimes unable to fulfil requests.  We would be very grateful if teaching staff check the current holdings in the library for your particular subject area.  If you need any assistance with this, please get in touch, we are always happy to help.

HOW THE BUDGET WORKS

The library has one budget to cover all booklist requirements across the faculties.  In general, we are happy to accommodate any requests, however we need to ensure that we have a broad coverage of all subject areas.  If we have already purchased a lot of resources in one particular area, we may request lecturing staff to consider resources from the existing collection.  Occasionally textbooks and ebooks are too expensive, in this case we will suggest possible alternatives.  The budget runs from July to June each year.
